New roofs, torn off to the deck and built in a day or two.

Most La Crosse houses get a full tear-off and a new asphalt roof in one or two days. We also install standing-seam steel and cedar shakes, and we fix leaks, flashing and storm-damaged sections.

What goes into every Northline roof

A roof is a stack of layers, and leaks start where one was skipped. This is the stack we put on every asphalt job, from the deck up.

Section through a Northline roof at the eave, showing seven numbered parts: the roof deck, drip edge, ice and water shield, synthetic underlayment, starter strip, architectural shingles and a seamless gutter. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 6'-0" min. Up-slope Eave
Section at the eave, drawn flat and not to scale. Steel and cedar roofs use the same deck, drip edge and ice barrier with their own underlayment.
  1. Roof deck, re-nailedEvery sheet gets walked and re-nailed. Soft sheets are replaced at the price on your quote, and we show you each one first.
  2. Drip edgeMetal edge at the eaves and rakes so water drops into the gutter instead of rotting the fascia.
  3. Ice and water shieldSelf-sealing membrane at least 6 feet up from every eave and down every valley, where ice dams push water back up.
  4. Synthetic underlaymentCovers the rest of the deck. It does not wrinkle or tear the way old felt paper does.
  5. Starter stripA sealed first row at the eave so the wind cannot get under the first course.
  6. Architectural shinglesSix nails per shingle, hand-placed. New pipe boots, step flashing and ridge vent go on at the same time.
  7. Gutter, re-hung or newWe take your gutters down for the tear-off and hang them back pitched to drain, or quote new seamless ones.

Three materials, priced by the square

A square is 100 square feet of roof. Prices are installed, with underlayment, flashing and vents, before tear-off. Your quote uses your real measurements.

Repair or replace?

We will tell you straight. If a repair buys you five good years, that is what we quote.

A repair usually does it when

  • The roof is under about 15 years old
  • The leak is at one spot: a pipe boot, a chimney, a valley
  • Wind took a few shingles and the rest lie flat
  • The deck feels solid when we walk it

Most repairs run $350 to $1,200, priced before we start.

It is time to replace when

  • Shingles curl, crack or cup across whole slopes
  • Granules pile up in the gutters after rain
  • You have leaks in more than one place
  • There are already two layers on the house

A typical 1,800 sq ft ranch runs about $13,600 to $17,500 in asphalt.

Questions we get on every roof

If yours is not here, call the office. You will talk to someone who has been on a roof this week.

How long does a new roof take?

Most houses in town take one day; bigger or steeper roofs take two. We only tear off what we can dry in the same day, so your house is never left open overnight.

Do you ever roof over the old shingles?

No. A layover hides soft decking, traps heat and shortens the new roof's life. Every Northline roof is a full tear-off down to the deck.

Can you roof in the winter?

Yes, on days above about 25°F with no snow on the deck. Shingles laid in the cold get hand-sealed along each course so they hold until spring warms the adhesive.

What happens to my landscaping and driveway?

We hang tarps over beds and siding, park the dumpster on boards, and run a magnet sweep over the yard and drive before we leave. You get a photo of the cleaned site in your report.

Who will actually be on my roof?

A Northline crew with one crew lead who stays on your job from tear-off to cleanup. You get the lead's cell number on day one.

See your number first.
