Iron Bluff Athletic Book a free class

Meet the coaches

Four coaches, and all of them are on the floor every week. These are the people who will learn your name, fix your stance and tell you when it is time to add weight.

A single black boxing glove lying on the gym floor by the ring ropes.

Dana Kowalczyk

Owner and head boxing coach

Dana started boxing at 29 to get through a long Wisconsin winter and never stopped. She opened Iron Bluff so people around Onalaska would not have to drive an hour to learn it properly.

She coaches footwork first, hands second and everything else after that. If it is your first class, she is probably the one wrapping your hands.

On the schedule
  • Bag Rounds
    Tue, Thu 5:30 AM
  • Boxing Fundamentals
Mon 5:30 PM; Tue, Thu 6:30 PM
  • Sparring Night
Sat 10:30 AM; Thu 7:30 PM
  • Technical Boxing
    Mon, Wed 7:30 PM
Ask her about
Footwork, the Thursday sparring list, and fitting training around shift work.

Marcus Vang

Strength coach

Marcus grew up in La Crosse and came to lifting through high school football. He keeps barbell classes to eight people so he can watch every rep.

Members on the Strength plan get a new eight-week plan from him. He would rather you add five pounds a week for a year than chase a big number on day one.

On the schedule
  • Barbell Strength
Mon, Wed, Fri 5:30 AM; Sat 9:15 AM; Mon, Wed 6:30 PM
  • Kettlebell Basics
Tue, Thu 6:30 AM; Fri 12:00 PM; Tue 5:30 PM
Ask him about
Squat depth, sore lower backs, and getting your first pull-up.

Tess Lindgren

Conditioning and mobility coach

Tess writes the Iron Circuit every week and keeps the clock honest. She also teaches Sunday Mobility and Recovery, which is slow on purpose.

If you are coming back after time off, or you sit at a desk all day, her classes are a good place to start.

On the schedule
  • Bag Rounds
    Mon, Wed, Fri 6:30 AM
  • Iron Circuit
Sun 10:00 AM; Mon, Wed 12:00 PM; Fri 4:30 PM; Thu 5:30 PM
  • Mobility and Recovery

Ask her about
Stiff hips, running alongside lifting, and how hard to push in your first month.

Eli Brenner

Boxing coach

Eli teaches the lunch-hour Boxing Fundamentals and the Saturday morning class, so he meets a lot of first-timers. Expect to be hitting pads within fifteen minutes.

He runs Sparring Night with Dana, and the two of them decide together when someone is ready for it.

On the schedule
  • Bag Rounds
    Fri 5:30 PM
  • Boxing Fundamentals
Sat 8:00 AM; Tue, Thu 12:00 PM; Wed 5:30 PM
  • Sparring Night
